An old SLC500 system

inherited a working and mostly trouble free SLC500 system at work. Hardware probably dates to around mid 1990’s, and upgrade of it has long been discussed, but always shelved because it just keeps working and we mostly don’t have trouble resolving issues when they come up.

The real problem is that we are having to maintain a 2005 vintage Dell laptop to interact with the PLC, and while it too is largely free of issues, we will be well and truly up a certain creek if the laptop fails on us. I would like to get a copy of rslogix to run on a windows 10 machine we have for other purposes, but I’m unsure if this is really feasible. I’ve not had a lot of luck in dealing with Rockwell as far as finding out costs and their payment scheme (key or subscription?). As with many manufacturers, they seem to have substituted “search our site” for customer service.

We’re not really opposed to the idea of replacing the hardware with something more open source, but given the work or porting or otherwise rebuilding out programming, and the widely available spares for our SLC500 on the secondary market, there’s some appeal to just working with what we’ve got and solving the software problem. Our IT guys don’t like doing anything with windows 10 anymore of course, but I can bully them into it if I have to. Can’t do that with the XP machine 😀

Looking for any thoughts on the subject, the sum total of what I know about PLC’s is from working with this system, so it’s not very much! Thanks in advance for any and all ideas.
