Description

The 1746-P4 is an SLC 500 power supply module that provides backplane power to a local chassis, expansion module or a remote I/O chassis. By providing backplane power, the modules attached to chassis slot becomes operable and capable of being recognized by the SLC processor.

This power supply has an input voltage requirement of 85 to 132/ 170 to 250V ac at frequency of 47 to 63 Hz. It is also provided with a 24VDC output that may be used to power external devices. It is not recommended to use this 24VDC output as supply for output modules. Doing so will make troubleshooting difficult to perform even for a single module as the system power supply will have to be shut off first which means the entire SLC 500 controller rack will have to be stopped.

All power supply of the SLC 500 product family features a feature called Hold-up time. Hold-up time refers to the capability of the processor to continue processing logic when the power supply module’s input supply falls below the nominal level. If the power supply continues to experience low voltage level and the hold-up time expires, the processor is stops processing the logic. Normal operation resumes once input voltage returns to normal level.

The specific hold-up time when the 1746-P4 is utilized is 20 ms (full load) 3000 ms (no load). This power supply is UL Listed as Industrial Control Equipment and certified for CSA Certified Process Control Equipment for Class 1, Div 2, Groups A, B, C, D Hazardous Locations.

Troubleshooting

The 1747-P4 is capable of 10 A at 5V DC 2.88 A at 24V DC to the backplane. Powered by single phase 85 to 132V AC or 170 to 250V AC at 47 to 63 Hz Attachable to  1746-A4, -A7, -A10, and -A13

1746-P4 Troubleshooting

  • Ensure power supply pins are correctly aligned to slide into the rack of the chassis
  • Visually inspect the board for damage
  • Make sure the power supply is inserted correctly

In this demonstration we will be using the following parts

  • 1747-A10
  • 1746-P4
  • Any card with LED indicators that come on when power is applied (we use the 1747-SDN)

Note: Not all power supplies will read exactly 24V. Refer to documentation for specifications.

Testing

  • Insert the power supply to the end of the rack
  • Ensure jumper is in the correct spot before powering on
  • 120 is selected
  • Apply power
  • The red power light will come on (at the light bulb symbol)
  • Check to see that 24V DC is supplied from the DC out

Next we’ll see if the power supply is powering the rack :

  • Using the 1747-SDN we check that each slot has power

If the rack is still not powering on but the power supply is on, the amperage of the application could be too high and you might need a bigger power supply. This can be calculated, the amperage that is being used in your application could be too high for the power supply to handle.

The following is an example to calculate the total current being drawn:

A 1747-L551 draws 1A at 5V DC A 1746-OV16 requires 0.270 A according to documentation A 1746-P2 supplies 5A at 5vDC to the backplane Checking to see if our power supply can handle the load we would use the following formula:

IT=I1+I2+I3

Using this formula, we can see that since 1A + .27A = 1.27A , the 1746-P2 would handle this load without a problem.
